BETWEEN TWO WORLDS

BETWEEN TWO WORLDS

In 1817, the young Ngare Raumati chief Tuai set off on a two-year trip to England, one of the first Māori to venture to Europe. Almost one hundred years later in 1908, Katherine Mansfield left Wellington to make a home in England. Both are the subjects of 2018 Ockham New Zealand Book Awards nominations: the shortlisted Tuai: A Traveller in Two Worlds by Alison Jones and Kuni Kaa Jenkins, and the longlisted A Strange Beautiful Excitement: Katherine Mansfield’s Wellington, by Redmer Yska. In conversation with Geoff Walker the authors reflect on encounters with other worlds, the shaping hand of place, and the contrasts between home and abroad.
