Writers Maris O’Rourke and Kim Workman have both dedicated a significant part of their lives to public service. From a rural Māori–Pākehā upbringing, via police service during the Springbok tour and then prison management, Workman now advocates for justice reform; O’Rourke was this country’s first Secretary of Education, and Director of Education for the World Bank.
Both have recently published memoirs – entitled respectively Zigzags and Leapfrogs and Journey Towards Justice. They reflect on living life with commitment, and calibrate the social challenges facing New Zealand in 2019 in a session chaired by Sonja Wilson.
