We join many in honouring the distinguished archaeologist Ian Smith, who died in Dunedin on 3 January 2020, after a long illness.
Ian made a huge contribution to New Zealand archaeology over many years of teaching, researching and writing at the University of Otago.
In November last year he celebrated the publication of Pākehā Settlements in a Māori World: New Zealand Archaeology 1769–1860 with family, friends and colleagues in Dunedin. This book, the culmination of his life’s work, is widely acknowledged for the contribution it makes to our understanding of early Pākehā life in New Zealand.
It has been a great pleasure for all at BWB to work with Ian on this book, and we extend warm sympathy to his close family and friends.
